Humberto Bautista, 18, and Johnny Martinez, 25, were arrested and a 17-year-old boy was taken into custody, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said on Saturday.

The trio are accused of using a handgun in a carjacking near Main Avenue and Monroe Street in Passaic around 7 p.m. Friday, Valdes said. The teen drove them away and eventually crashed near the Route 3 entrance of Route 21 in Clifton, she said.

An off-duty Passaic officer fired one shot but did not hit anyone and another officer was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries from a car crash while in pursuit of the carjacked vehicle, Passaic Detective Andy White said.

The handgun was found at the scene, Valdes said.

Bautista and Martinez were each charged with carjacking and unlawful possession of a weapon, the prosecutor said. Bautista was also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The teen was issued a delinquency complaint accusing him of unlawful possession of a weapon and eluding police, Valdes said.

Bautista was held on $200,000 bail and Martinez on $100,000 bail, she said. The teen was held in juvenile detention, Valdes said.
